Types of Gastrointestinal Surgery Performed

1. Laparoscopic Roux-En-Y Gastric Bypass
2. Lap-Band System

Roux-En-Y
The Roux-en-Y gastric bypass is currently the most commonly performed weight loss operation in the United States. It is has proven to provide excellent weight loss results in the majority of patients.

The Lap-Band System
The Lap-Band System’s silicone band is placed around the upper part of the stomach to create a small stomach pouch that can hold only a small amount of food.
The lower, larger part of the stomach is below the band.
Food will pass through the outlet (stoma) from the upper stomach pouch to the lower part more slowly, and you will feel full longer. A surgical stapler is used to divide the upper portion of the stomach from the lower portion. The remaining upper portion (the pouch) is only 1 to 2 tablespoons in size. All food is diverted past the lower stomach and upper intestine by connecting the middle part of the small intestine to the pouch. Therefore, digestion will begin in the middle section of the small intestine.

Laparoscopic or open bariatric surgery, such as gastric banding or bypass is not an easy solution to morbid obesity and weight loss. It is a serious surgical procedure, involving health risks. To produce lasting weight loss it requires a long-term patient commitment to eating a healthy diet and following a regular program of physical exercise. Life-long use of nutritional supplements may also be necessary. So, before deciding, discuss your options fully with your doctor. © 2003-2008 Bariatric-Surgery.Info - Terms - Contact - Information - Resources - Add URL
